Morocco is a country in Northern Africa, bordering Algeria and Western Sahara, and also the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. It is separated from Europe, more specifically Spain, by the Straight of Gibraltar and a 50 mile one hour ferry ride. Even though it is so close geographically to Spain, culturally it is quite different. The vast majority of the population is Muslim.
Although it might be a bit of a culture shock at first for those unfamiliar with traditional Muslim culture, you will find that it is a wonderful country, where you can get lost in history while checking out the sights. You can enjoy the cities, the dunes of the desert, the monuments, and even watch snake charmers.
Morocco gained its independence from France in 1956. The main language of the country is Arabic, but many also speak French. Although the largest city is Casablanca, the capital is Rabat.
Other important cities are Agadir, Fes, Marrakesh, Meknes, and Tangier.
