Hillcrest is a neighborhood in San Diego, in the Uptown area. It is north of downtown, and covers the area north and west of the world famous Balboa Park.

It is one the the older areas of San Diego, but has had a resurgence over recent years, and is now one of the most happening places in San Diego. It is an area known for its culture, diversity, and tolerance, and is the predominant gay and lesbian area of San Diego. Lining the streets are a full range of homes, apartments, small stores and boutiques, coffee houses, restaurants and bars. It is a very walkable area, and has managed to maintain its charm, even with the bland newer developments going in elsewhere.

There area is home to many gay bars, probably moreso than "straight bars", but don't be discouraged if you are not gay. There is plenty to do for everyone.
