Mexico City, which was founded by the Aztecs in 1325 and once the center of the Aztec civilization known as Tenochtitlán, is the capital of Mexico. The city spans the State of Mexico on the north, the Federal District, and into Morelos in the south. It lies on the dry bed of Lake Texcoco, which is surrounded on three sides by tall mountains. It is both the highest city on the North American continent at 7349 ft, and the oldest.
