Coronado is located across the bay from downtown San Diego, and is usually referred to as an island, although there is a thin strip of land, the Silver Strand, connecting it to the mainland. This strand connects to Imperial Beach via Highway 75, although the easier way to access the island is via the beautiful Coronado Bridge. Many people think Coronado is part of San Diego, and while part of San Diego County, it is not within city limits, though downtown San Diego is clearly visible from the north and east sides of the "island".
More than half of the "island" belongs to the North Island Naval Air Station, home to two aircraft carriers and the Naval Amphibious Base.
If you are in town visiting without a car, the island can be reached by taking a ferry, which runs every hour from the Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego.
One of the most famous sites in Coronado is the Hotel Del Coronado, a world famous resort hotel, located right on the beach, and the filming location of the Marilyn Monroe movie "Some Like It Hot".
