The Wild Animal Park, part of the San Diego Zoo organization, is located in Escondido, about a 45 minute drive north of the city of San Diego. It is quite an intersting place. It covers a vast area of land, and is laid out to be almost more like a safari than any zoo is. Many of the animals mingle together in huge enclosures, covering many acres. To see all the park has to offer you take a tram ride around the grounds, which takes about an hour, but allows you to see giraffes, rhinos, lions, tigers, and many more animals, in a natural environment.
The only downside to this as a visitor to the park is that the animals have so much space, so sometimes you don't see them, as they are hidden out of view. To get the most out of a day there, definately take the tram tour, and be prepared to do some walking.
For those who want a more up close and personal experience, you can actually pay to have a truck drive through the habitats where you encounter the animals in a way similar to if you were on an actual safari.
