On January 1, 1993, the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia (which had gained its independence when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1989) split into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In March 1999, the country was admitted into NATO, and in 2004 it joined the European Union (EU).

It is located in the approximate geographic center of Europe, bordered by Germany, Poland, Austria, and Slovakia.
