Florence - Facts and Travel Information

Florence is the capital city of the region of Tuscany. Firenze, as it's called in Italian, is located in north central Tuscany on the Arno River, and has a city population of around 400,000 people. It is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and is still known throughout the world as not a only a beautiful city, but its art, architecture, and culture. Further proof of its place in history is the opinion that "of the 1000 most important European artists of the second millennium, 350 lived or worked in Florence."

Probably the most famous architectural sites in Florence is the domed cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, known as "The Duomo" or "Il Duomo". Another well known place is the Uffizi Gallery, known as one of the finest art museums in the world. There are also many other galleries where you can find works created by the likes of Donatello, Giambologna, and Michelangelo. In Signoria square you will find the Fountain of Neptune, a famous marble sculpture.
