Although many people think of Holland as being synonomous with the country the Netherlands, it is actually a region within the Netherlands. Often the two names are used interchangeably, though this is technically incorrect.

The region of Holland is in the western part of the country, on the North Sea, and actually consists of two provinces of the Netherlands, North Holland and South Holland. The city of Amsterdam is located in North Holland.
