Romanshorn is located in the canton of Thurgau, on the west shore of Lake Constance. Though it was originally a small fishing village, it emerged as an important commercial center, in part due to the railway built in 1856 connecting it to Zurich. Its location on Lake Constance plays a part in Romanshorn's importance, as it allows communication with other towns on the shore.
