Ukraine is located in eastern Europe, and is bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and the Black Sea. The territory of Ukraine became the center of the most important state in Europe during the 10th and 11th centuries. Although for many of its years it was divided because of different ruling powers, Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The republic is subdivided into 24 regions called oblasti, 1 autonomous republic in the Crimea, and 2 municipalities. Its capitol city is Kiev.
